Fourteenth Annual Block Island Workshops
for Adults
Monday, September 15, 2008 to
Monday, September 22, 2008.
This workshop has proven to be so popular that we have added a second one-week session.
Monday, September 22, 2008 to
Monday, September 29, 2008.
Reminder: Labor Day is Monday, September 1, 2008.
Here's the summary, and you should read this page first... Then, for a complete description and photos of our Block Island Workshop, please click here.
Open to all media, these popular September workshops are always a fantastic and rewarding time.
For many of us, the comfortable and well-appointed Summer Hill Guest House is our home, while others enjoy making their own accommodations at inns and bed-and-breakfasts. Regardless of where you stay, you'll enjoy the company of some pretty remarkable people, some of whom have returned year-after-year since the workshops started thirteen years ago!
Bring whatever media you're familiar with and can use outdoors. The Island will be our classroom and we'll be drawing and painting Rhode Island's beautiful, natural wonder at different locations each day.
This workshop is not for beginners, and space is definitely limited. Enrollment is on a first-received, first-enrolled basis and that starts with your quick response to our brochure. So, if you would like to receive one sometime in May, call (401) 331-2021. Most of those who come feel that it's among the best outings they've ever had.
We hope you'll be able to join us. Learn more...

Polaroid® and Emulsion Transfer
for Adults only
Monday, August 4 and Wednesday, August 6
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
A two-day workshop about two processes: Polaroid® transfer and emulsion transfer. We begin experimenting with Polaroid® transfer that can be used to "paint" with film by layering and collaging on paper. Secondary images imbedded in the film add a measure of interest and surprise to these collages. Incorporating additional materials, such as handmade paper, enhances the texture and complexity within the layers of each piece. Students will be asked to shoot a roll of slides or bring slides from home for the second day.
Day two explores emulsion transfer, a technique that uses color slides and projects them through a Daylab® onto self-developing Polaroid® film. The Polaroid® film is separated, leaving a latent image on each side of the ground, with one side consisting of dye used for transfers, and the other side made up of film used for the emulsion process. By placing the picture in hot water, the film can be lifted from the paper ground and transferred onto a new surface. The positive image from the original slide will be impregnated into the film. The film can be cut, torn, stretched and manipulated in any number of ways and collaged on paper to build a new image.
Instructor: Kristin Street
2 sessions, each 3 hours.
Tuition: $80. Cameras will be provided.

Materials Not Included...
When a course listing says "Materials not included", that means we try to take advantage of any materials you may already have (please bring to first class) or can make yourself. The instructor will tell you what materials will be required and where you can buy them if needed.
